450 ICT experts from universities and research centres take part in the RedIRIS technical conference

The meeting is held in the Rabanales Campus of Cordoba University


The Rabanales Campus seminar rooms of Cordoba University are hosting the 21st RedIRIS technical conference, which runs from today until 19 November. The event will be attended by more than 450 experts and ICT managers from universities and research centres belonging to the RedIRIS community, who will exchange information and expertise. Thirteen sponsoring companies of the event are also represented at the conference.

The inauguration ceremony, which took place at 10:00, was chaired by Juan Antonio Caballero Molina, Vice Chancellor of Information and Communication Technologies of Cordoba University. He shared the platform with the Deputy Director General of Planning of Exceptional Scientific and Technological Infrastructure of the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN), José Doncel; the Secretary General of the Provincial Department of the Ministry for Innovation and Science of Andalusia, José Luis Gambra; Alba María Doblas, Delegate Councillor of Council of Córdoba; and the Director of RedIRIS, Tomás de Miguel.

The inaugural address was given by Félix Tellez, representative of Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA), an Exceptional Scientific and Technological CIEMAT facility. The plenary address was given by Ramón Soriguer, biologist at the Biology Station at Doñana, who presented the research made by the biological research station and described the importance to biologists of remote observations making use of the new communications network.

Over the three days of the conference, organised with the collaboration of Cordoba University, there are parallel sessions with speakers on various subjects such as digital content, infrastructure management, federated services, campus networks and electronic administration.

The closing ceremony on 19 November will be chaired by Juan Antonio Caballero, Vice Chancellor of Information and Communication Technologies of Cordoba University; and Tomás de Miguel, Director of RedIRIS. This event will be preceded by a roundtable discussion on DNSSEC deployment, with the participation of José Miguel Femenia of Valencia University (UV); Antoni Santos of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), and Silvia Onsurbe, technologist with the public business entity Red.es. The plenary address, "Performance challenges in large-scale web search engines", will be given by Berkant Barla Cambazoglu of Yahoo Labs.

As is customary, the event was preceded by RedIRIS Work Groups, which were held at the same venue on 15 and 16 November, together with the meetings of the RedIRIS Advisory Committee and the RedIRIS meeting with regional academic network managers.
