EGEE-III

EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE) is a project financed by the 7th EU R&D Framework Programme, through which more than 100 research entities (essentially European, but with the participation of other continents), under the co-ordination of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (known by its initials in French, CERN), have established the largest distributed computing infrastructure ("Grid") in operation devoted to science.

The EGEE project not only deploys Grid infrastructure, but also disseminates its use and facilitates the co-ordination of the different agents involved (research networks, computing centres, application developers, researchers, etc.) and the development of common elements (middleware, authentication systems, security mechanisms, etc.).

The EGEE project is currently in its third phase (EGEE-III) which, after deploying the infrastructure in the two previous phases, pursues as main objectives the expansion and optimisation of said infrastructure, as well as its migration from a community-based project model to one based on the federation of National Grid Infrastructures.
