Dear All,

During the last two years we observed very little interest in X.500 among National Research Networks. Various reasons, including the cost of commercial software, Y2K replication problems with old free Quipu and the evolving LDAP protocol, made X.500 not so attractive. And, to make it even more difficult, privacy and legal issues emerged, making free directory replication on the international level (as it was done in NameFLOW-Paradise) a no go.

The NameFLOW LDAPv3 server was introduced last year, holding LDAP references to national LDAP servers/gateways. Of course, it is rather useless for search purposes, it acts mostly like an entry point to national LDAP services, in addition to the NameFLOW Registry. A TIO-based search solution is being developed within the framework of the TF-LSD group.

I am announcing that after two years of operation, the NameFLOW X.500 server has finally been shut down.

Unfortunately, this has affected the LDAP server, as it still contains referrals to the NameFLOW X.500 server, according to the strategy described in the report [http://www.dante.net/nameflow/report/qr/01Q1-tech.html]. This affects national services based on LDAPv2 servers or LDAP-to-X.500 gateways. If you would like to fix it, please give me the LDAP URL of you national server. You can check the current conten of the NameFLOW LDAP server using LDAPv3 [ldap://ldap.nameflow.net:389/], web gateway or LDIF gateway [http://www.dante.net/nameflow/ldif.html] You can also check if the Registry information is valid: http://www.dante.net/nameflow/national.html

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Best regards,
Konstantin.
